What Is A Fish Pedicure?
You may be wondering what actually is a fish pedicure? Beauty treatments and health spa treatments offering a fish pedicure can often take a consumer by surprise. What could appear to be a fad to bring in curious customers is actually a well-documented treatment that is used the world over to gently remove dead and dry skin from the feet and legs of patrons. There are people who routinely seek out the top health spas in far away and exotic locations such as Turkey, Japan, Croatia, China, Belgium, the Netherlands, South Korea, Singapore, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Hungary, Slovakia, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Spain, France, the US, and the UK. People are often very surprised to find the service of a fish pedicure offered in a local spa but the practice is growing and could very well be found at a local establishment offering pedicures.
The fish pedicure is carried out by a distinct species of fish. The official names of the two fish that can be used for the fish pedicure are Garra rufa and Cyprinion macrostomus. These fish are very small and do not have teeth. They forge on the dead skin cells of a person’s feet or legs that are submerged into their water habitat. It is often thought that the fish consume the skin but many scientists have proven that they do not eat the skin as much as they remove it looking for food they would find in a natural habitat. Through gentle nibbling the fish loosens and removes dead built up skin. It is a common and successful treatment for people suffering from psoriasis and eczema and other skin disorders. This exotic treatment for skin disorders was extended as a way to get a gentle pedicure since the skin removal is beneficial in both cases. Along with the removal of the skin it is considered that the environment of the fish gently swimming around and touching the person can contribute to a patient’s or client’s sense of well-being during a fish pedicure treatment.
The fish used in a fish pedicure are also known as nibble fish, kangal fish, and pedicure fish. While the fish have long been used for skin treatments, their use for pedicures, manicures, and spa treatments is relatively new. The therapy or spa treatment using the Garra rufa or nibble fish for a fish pedicure is known as ichthyotherapy and can be found under this name in some spas. As it has gained popularity it has also grown in recognition as simply a fish pedicure.
In choosing a spa that offers a fish pedicure it is important to make sure that the environment of the fish looks clean and well cared for and that there is an abundance of healthy fish in the tank or pedicure area. Moving the fish from pedicure to pedicure is not considered a healthy experience for the fish and instead a person will likely sit for approximately 15 to 30 minutes with their feet and lower legs submerged into a community pool or pond area within the spa facility. The use of healthy and well cared for fish will offer the best experience of a fish pedicure and a safe fish pedicure.
